Many of us work in companies with established culture statements, often punctuated with somewhere between three and five words as headers. Depending on leadership these statements can be very much alive or just something in a picture frame in reception, I’ve worked in both.

In thinking about where you want to work it is vital that you understand and align with the desired culture (even if that doesn’t quite match the one in the picture frame).

On top of that I have always been keen on the idea of having a personal culture statement which I have also shared with every team I’ve had the pleasure of leading.

Many of you will have seen pieces from George the poet before, he pops up here there and everywhere and is a truly inspirational character. A few years ago he did this piece and the moment I heard it I thought he hit the nail on the head for who I want to be.

It’s important to have a north star personally, and yes I’ll fall short every now and then but still keep striving.

FAIR: Fairness is based in consideration yes, but also fairness means expecting the right amount from people.

HONEST: In a mature environment we’re got to be able to call out what isnt right, only then can we collaborate to improve.

POSITIVE: The flavour of energy we put out in the world is a choice, positivity doesn’t not mean putting a glossy tint on everything we see, it does mean showing energy and will to progress.

CREATIVE: There’s bravery in creativity, the willingness to stop and say…. what about if we do this? If you have already fostered an environment that is Fair, Honest & Positive than guess what, creativity is so much less scary.
